Nigella Sativa, also known as Black Seed, is a herbaceous plant belonging to the Ranunculaceae family. Some other names for Nigella Sativa include Black Cumin, Roman coriander, black sesame, nutmeg flower, and black wheat.

It is also used as a liver tonic, digestive aid, antidiarrheal, appetite stimulant, emmenagogue, to increase milk production in breastfeeding mothers to combat parasitic infections and support the immune system. Most of the therapeutic properties of this plant are attributed to the presence of thymoquinone, which is an important active chemical component of the essential oil. Black seeds are also used in food as a flavoring additive in bread and pickles because they have a very low toxicity level.
